But I wonder if it was not the first reality TV show in the hyperreal sense of the word. I wonder if that family was manipulated by the producers to enhance their "reality." That was the case with "The Real World."Scott Andrewshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01185977061159785550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2951678752723387451.post-72836711523919571292010-11-01T12:47:34.963-07:002010-11-01T12:47:34.963-07:00Great essay (or perhaps I should, as this is an es...Great essay (or perhaps I should, as this is an essay on a blog, use Stephen Fry's term of "blessay").

One tiny point: I would say reality TV began with "An American Family," the 1973 PBS documentary about a California family called the Louds.JDWnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2951678752723387451.post-25750289797258546312010-11-01T05:10:43.855-07:002010-11-01T05:10:43.855-07:00I want your job! Another curious aspect, especially given the before and after cosmetic surgery shows is this: are the women really any prettier? That's a big part of the fascination. In Heidi's extreme case, the "after" face brings to mind a jigsaw puzzle, and each piece of the puzzle is pretty on its own, but they don't come together right. The breast enhancement, to me, is like seeing the Hoover Dam or the Eiffel Tower (or both): geez, I didn't think man could create such things.
